چکیده

Status of this Memo This memo discusses two extensions to the TCP protocol to provide a more efficient operation over a network with a high bandwidth*delay product. The extensions described in this document have been implemented and shown to work using resources at NASA. This memo describes an Experimental Protocol, these extensions are not proposed as an Internet standard, but as a starting point for further research. Distribution of this memo is unlimited. Abstract Two extensions to the TCP protocol are described in this RFC in order to provide a more efficient operation over a network with a high bandwidth*delay product. The main issue that still needs to be solved is congestion versus noise. This issue is touched on in this memo, but further research is still needed on the applicability of the extensions in the Internet as a whole infrastructure and not just high bandwidth*delay product networks. Even with this outstanding issue, this document does describe the use of these options in the isolated satellite network environment to help facilitate more efficient use of this special medium to help off load bulk data transfers from links needed for interactive use.

On the State of ECN and TCP Options on the Internet

Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) is a TCP/IP extension that can avoid packet loss and thus improve network performance. Though standardized in 2001, it is barely used in today’s Internet. This study, following on previous active measurement studies over the past decade, shows marked and continued increase in the deployment of ECNcapable servers, and usability of ECN on the majority of pat...

SDTCP: Towards Datacenter TCP Congestion Control with SDN for IoT Applications

The Internet of Things (IoT) has gained popularity in recent years. Today's IoT applications are now increasingly deployed in cloud platforms to perform Big Data analytics. In cloud data center networks (DCN), TCP incast usually happens when multiple senders simultaneously communicate with a single receiver. However, when TCP incast happens, DCN may suffer from both throughput collapse for TCP ...

Dynamic Adjustment of TCP Window Sizes

The original design of TCP failed to support reasonable performance over networks with large bandwidths and high round-trip times. Subsequent work on TCP has enabled the use of larger flow-control windows, yet the use of these options is still relatively rare, because manual tuning has been required. Other work has developed means for avoiding this manual tuning step, but those solutions lack g...

Forward RTO - Recovery ( F - RTO ) : An Algorithm for Detecting

Spurious retransmission timeouts cause suboptimal TCP performance because they often result in unnecessary retransmission of the last window of data. This document describes the F-RTO detection algorithm for detecting spurious TCP retransmission timeouts. F-RTO is a TCP sender-only algorithm that does not require any TCP options to operate. After retransmitting the first unacknowledged segment ...
